Will July 4 weekend fireworks be rained out? Mother Nature might have its own plan

Morning and early afternoon showers and later-in-the-day thunderstorms could spread across Charlotte on July 4, the National Weather Service forecast showed Thursday night.

Then again, nothing could fall, NWS meteorologist Chris Horne told The Charlotte Observer.

“There might be a few showers during the late morning, and the chances for thunderstorms increase in the afternoon,” Horne said. “Or it might be a completely dry day in Charlotte” with rain dumping on the Queen City Tuesday.

That’s how the weather goes in summer: unpredictably, he said.

What is certain, he said: Every day this weekend and early next week will be nothing out of the ordinary, with temperatures in the 90s predicted and humidity levels ripe for afternoon thunderstorms.

“It’s exactly what the weather is expected to be on any given day across the Piedmont in summer,” he said.

Highs could climb from 88 degrees Friday and Saturday to 90 Sunday, 91 Monday, 92 Tuesday, 91 Wednesday and 90 Thursday, according to the forecast.

Sunday has the greatest chance of showers and thunderstorms — 50% — mainly after 10 a.m., the forecast showed.

The chance lowers to 40% Monday through Wednesday before rising again to 50% Thursday, NWS meteorologists predicted.
