Keep the winter coats out.

A Canadian cold weather system that settled in Charlotte over the weekend is expected to leave temperatures well below normal until Thanksgiving, a National Weather Service meteorologist said Tuesday.

One weather model suggests “chances are pretty good we’ll have a real rainmaker” of a system arriving in Charlotte from the west on Thanksgiving Eve and lasting through Thursday, said meteorologist Doug Outlaw of the NWS office in Greer, South Carolina.

Unseasonably cold in Charlotte for Thanksgiving

Until Thanksgiving, temperatures should remain unseasonably cold, he said.

“It’s normal to have some cold temperatures in November,” Outlaw said. “But the level of the cold temperatures matches what we would have in mid-January.”

The normal high for Charlotte is 50 degrees at the beginning of January, 51 in mid-January and 52 at January’s end, Outlaw said. Lows average 30, 29 and 30 for those periods, he said.

Weather forecast

A high of 46 is forecast in Charlotte Tuesday, compared with the normal historic high of 63 degrees for Nov. 15, he said.

Charlotte has a 90% chance of showers Tuesday, followed by a 40% chance at night and mostly sun the rest of the week, according to the 10 a.m. Tuesday forecast.

Early Wednesday’s predicted low of 40 would match the historic average low for the date, but temperatures are then forecast to plummet into next week.

The NWS forecasts lows of 33 early Thursday, 28 early Friday, 30 early Saturday and early Sunday and 27 early Monday.

NWS forecasters predict highs of 55 Wednesday, 47 Thursday, 50 Friday and Saturday, 49 Sunday and 50 Monday.
