Hail up to an inch in size is possible in Charlotte on Sunday, according to a special weather alert issued by the National Weather Service.

Scattered thunderstorms are expected to occur in two rounds, one during the day and the other late Sunday night, an alert by NWS just after 10 a.m. said. Lightning and heavy rainfall are possible.

A tornado cannot be ruled out, especially with Sunday night’s storms, according to NWS.

Some of the storms may become severe, producing large hail greater than one inch in diameter, and damaging wind gusts, the alert said.

Mecklenburg County used its alert system to issue a warning on lightning at about 8:50 a.m.

The storms are likely to continue into Monday afternoon, according to the NWS forecast. Sunday’s high is 70 degrees and the overnight low is 59 degrees.
