Hundreds of flights delayed, canceled at Charlotte Douglas Airport due to weather
The massive storm looming above much of the southeastern U.S. is preventing some passengers from leaving the Charlotte Douglas International Airport.
As of 4:20 p.m. Tuesday, 57 flights were canceled and 489 were delayed, according to FlightAware. Piedmont Airlines has had 35 cancellations, and American Airlines has had 272 delays.
The roads leading up to the airport began to flood around 2:30 p.m., the airport posted on X, formerly known as Twitter. Wilkinson Boulevard was flooded west of the airport between Old Dowd Road and Sam Wilson Road. Only one westbound lane remained opened.
About Charlotte’s Airport
Charlotte Douglas remains one of the busiest airports in the world. The Airport Council International ranked CLT the seventh-busiest worldwide for arrivals and departures, according to the group’s preliminary rankings for 2022.
The airport is a hub for American Airlines, which handles the vast majority of flights from CLT.
The airport recently held a groundbreaking for its fourth parallel runway, the final part of a 10-year, $3.1 billion capital project at the airport. The $1 billion runway, part of the project called Destination CLT, will be 10,000 feet long and 150 feet wide to accommodate the airport’s increasing traffic. After its completion in 2027, the additional runway will allow for a 20% to 25% increased capacity for arrivals and departures.
