Severe storms with hail, damaging winds threaten Charlotte on Tuesday, NWS says

NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE

Severe storms with hail and damaging winds threaten metro Charlotte and Upstate South Carolina Tuesday afternoon and evening, National Weather Service meteorologists said in a severe weather alert.

“Straight-line damaging winds is the primary threat,” NWS forecasters said Monday night on social media.

Scattered showers and thunderstorms emerged in the Blue Ridge Mountains around daybreak Tuesday and were expected to spread to the Piedmont by afternoon, “in an environment better suited for severe weather,” according to the alert by the NWS office in Greer, South Carolina.

Brace for storms between 1 p.m. and 8 p.m., NWS meteorologists said.

“Damaging wind gusts, cloud-to-ground lightning, small hail,” according to the alert.

Charlotte forecast

Heavy rainfall and strong gusts pose the main threats with the strongest storms predicted in Charlotte on Tuesday, NWS forecasters said in a severe-weather update Tuesday morning.

Clouds, showers and thunderstorms “will keep temperatures a few degrees cooler than the last few days,” NWS forecasters said on social media. A high of 82 is predicted, according to the NWS Charlotte forecast at 10 a.m. Tuesday.

Skies should clear by Tuesday night and remain sunny to mostly sunny through Saturday, with highs in the mid- to upper 80s, the forecast showed.
