Snow possible east of NC mountains, NWS says. Here’s where it could fall this week
Some parts of the Charlotte region may break a snow drought dating back to 2022 if flakes fall Monday afternoon through Tuesday.
The Greenville-Spartanburg National Weather Service says snow flurries are in the forecast early this week east of the North Carolina mountains, including the Charlotte area and east of Interstate 77. Snow flakes could fall late Monday afternoon through early Tuesday morning.
Little to no accumulation is expected, except for some higher elevations in the mountains near the Tennessee border, according to the weather service.
The forecast says there’s an 11% chance of 0.1 inch of snow in Shelby, 32% in Hickory, 37% in Charlotte and 44% in Statesville. The highest chance near Charlotte is in the Wilkesboro area, where the National Weather Service says there’s a 60% chance of 0.1 inch of snow or more.
Charlotte hasn’t seen a trace or more of snow since January 2022, when 4.3 inches fell, according to weather service records. It’s the longest snow drought in Charlotte’s history, WCNC reported in November.
Besides the possibility of snow, it’ll be sunny during the day Monday, with a high near 47 degrees, and partly cloudy Monday night, with a low around 24 degrees. It’ll be sunny Tuesday with a high near 43 degrees, according to the National Weather Service.
