Charlotte could see wintry weather this week. What’s the forecast for Christmas?

After he checks his list a couple of times, visibility in Charlotte should be clear for Santa’s sleigh as many prepare to celebrate Christmas this Wednesday, Dec. 25.

This year, the first day of Hanukkah and Christmas Day share the same date — something that’s only happened a handful of times during the last century, Vox reported. And Kwanzaa, a celebration of African culture, also begins this week on Thursday, Dec. 26, The News & Observer previously reported.

Chance of freezing rain & ice

There is a slight chance of freezing rain in the Charlotte area overnight on Monday, Dec. 23, according to the the local National Weather Service (NWS) office.

There is a “limited” accumulation risk for southern Mecklenburg County, Union County, York County and Chester County, meaning “a light glaze of ice could cause hazardous travel conditions on bridges, overpasses and untreated or secondary roads,” the NWS says.

Christmas Eve weather forecast in Charlotte

As Santa prepares to deliver presents, you can expect mostly sunny skies with a high near 53 degrees on Christmas Eve, according to a forecast from the NWS.

Temperatures are slated to dip to near-freezing that night, but skies are expected to remain clear, the NWS says.

Charlotte weather forecast for Christmas Day & Hanukkah

Similar conditions are expected on Christmas Day, with a high of 52 degrees and winds of up to five miles per hour, according to the NWS.

Clouds are expected to move in that night as temperatures drop to 36 degrees.

Is any severe weather expected this week?

Skies should remain mostly clear until Friday night, when there is a 30% chance of showers, according to the NWS.

The chance of rain jumps to 50% on Saturday night and last into Sunday, with a low in the mid-40s and a high temperature near 60 degrees, the NWS says.
