Charlotte’s 80 degree temperature Sunday broke heat record last set in the 1990s
The weekend’s warm weather saw a new record high temperature in Charlotte, according to the National Weather Service.
Temperatures reached 80 degrees at Charlotte Douglas International Airport on Sunday, upending the previous record set in 1994 when it hit 77 degrees.
It was the second time just last week that the city saw a record-setting temperature. An 80-degree high at the airport Feb. 4 beat out a nearly 100-year-old temperature last set in 1927 when it hit a record 76 degrees, the NWS reported.
But the warm, sunny weather appears to have been short-lived. Temperatures are expected to be around the mid-30s and 40s Wednesday, and showers are expected throughout the week in Charlotte, aside from Friday, which should be sunny and have temperatures around 51 degrees, according to the NWS.
Cold temperatures return
A winter weather advisory was issued Tuesday morning by the NWS for parts of the Charlotte region and Western North Carolina. Iredell and Catawba counties, as well as parts of the North Carolina mountains, could see mixes of snow, ice and sleet. The advisory is in effect until 7 a.m. Wednesday.
An ice storm warning is also in effect for parts of the mountains, which could see as much as a half-inch of ice, the NWS said. Avery and Burke counties are expected to see the worst conditions.
“Ice accumulations could make many roads treacherous and impassable. The weight of ice on tree limbs and power lines could produce numerous outages,” forecasters said. “Locations along and east of Highway 221 could see up to one half inch.”
