Rain could arrive in the Charlotte area by the start of the Coca-Cola 600 in Concord on Sunday, but anything that falls should be light, a National Weather Service meteorologist said Friday.

Ditto with Memorial Day in Charlotte, NWS forecaster Mike Rehnberg said.

The NASCAR race begins at 6 p.m. Sunday.

“I’d say our chances of rain during that period are better than no rain at all,” Rehnberg said about the 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. time frame at the speedway Sunday.

He put the chance of showers at 50% to 55%.

“Again, it’s hit or miss,” he said. “We’ll have a better idea in the next 24 hours.”

Concord has a 40% chance of showers mainly after 11 a.m. Sunday before the chance increases into the night, according to the Concord NWS forecast at 9 a.m. Friday.

Charlotte Memorial Day forecast

Charlotte should be cloudy on Memorial Day, with a 50% chance of showers and a high near 76, the forecast showed.

Showers “are likely” late Monday and all day Tuesday, with the chance at 70%, according to the forecast.

The good news: No thunderstorms are expected with the rain, Rehnberg said.
