NWS issues heat advisory for Charlotte, surrounding areas. How hot will it get?
Charlotte and surrounding areas are under a heat advisory Saturday with high temperatures expected throughout the weekend.
The National Weather Service issued a heat advisory for noon through 8 p.m. Saturday for Mecklenburg, Cabarrus and Union counties. The heat index may reach 105 degrees, the weather service warned.
And according to the NWS, more extreme heat is likely Sunday.
Local agencies activated emergency programs to help vulnerable populations, with some relief forecast for the middle of next week.
Charlotte weekend forecast
Temperatures will reach up to about 95 degrees in Charlotte Saturday, with the heat index reaching into triple digits, the NWS forecast says.
There’s a 30% chance of showers and thunderstorms in Charlotte Saturday afternoon and evening.
Things will stay hot on Sunday, with a high of 96 and heat index values as high as 106, according to the NWS forecast.
The weather service predicts issuing another heat advisory for the Charlotte metro area Sunday.
How to protect yourself from heat
Charlotte-area agencies are monitoring the extreme heat, Mecklenburg County said in a news release on the weekend weather.
Outreach staff are going out to homeless encampments to share information on cooling stations and water, the county said.
CATS is offering free transportation through Sunday to the day services centers, recreation centers and senior centers designated as cooling stations. Those locations include:

Block Love Charlotte’s Day Services Center, 2738 N. Graham St.
David B. Waymer Recreation Center, 14008 Holbrooks Road, Huntersville
Eastway Regional Recreation Center, 3150 Eastway Park Dr., Charlotte
Ivory/Baker Recreation Center, 1920 Stroud Park Court, Charlotte
Northern Regional Recreation Center, 18121 Old Statesville Road, Cornelius
Revolution Park Sports Academy, 1225 Remount Road, Charlotte
Tyvola Senior Center, 2225 Tyvola Road, Charlotte
The county’s public pools and splashpads are open through the weekend. Local library branches are also open to the public, the county noted.
When will things cool off in Charlotte?
Some relief from the heat is in the forecast for Charlotte, according to the NWS.
The weather service predicts high temperatures will drop back into the 80s by Tuesday and Wednesday.
But according to the forecast, temperatures will climb back into the 90s by Thursday and Friday.
