Severe storms pummel the Charlotte area on Saturday. ‘Beware and take shelter.’

Emergency responders urged people on Lake Norman to seek cover, as storms with hail and strong winds pummeled parts of the Charlotte area on Saturday.

“Mountain Island Lake and the Catawba River, also beware!” Huntersville firefighters warned.

At 6:30 p.m., about 4,000 Duke Energy customers were without power on the Brawley School Road peninsula on Lake Norman in Mooresville and at least 9,600 statewide, down from 10,855 an hour earlier, the company outage map showed.

National Weather Service meteorologists warned Huntersville, Cornelius, Mount Holly, Denver and Sherrills Ford of 40-mph wind gusts and pea-size hail until 4:15 p.m. Thunder crackled and skies darkened in Mooresville.

At least 415 flights were delayed at Charlotte’s airport by 7:30 p.m., according to tracking site Flight Aware.com.

No damage was immediately reported.

NWS forecasters warned earlier Saturday of “scattered to numerous” afternoon storms.

“Some storms will produce frequent cloud to ground lightning, gusty winds and very heavy rainfall,” meteorologists said. “A few storms could produce brief strong-to-damaging wind gusts.”

This is a developing story.
