Blue Ridge Parkway predicts ice storm will topple trees, plans to close, park says
The Blue Ridge Parkway intends to block all entrances in North Carolina and Virginia late Friday in advance of a massive winter storm, the National Park Service says.
Great Smoky Mountains National Park has also announced that US 441/Newfound Gap Road – the main passage through the park – will close at 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 23, for the storm. Ten additional roads in the park will close at 10 a.m. Saturday, including the Cades Cove Loop and all sections of Foothills Parkway.
“Significant winter weather is forecast for this weekend along the Parkway and surrounding areas. ... Park visitors and neighbors should expect closed gates, as well as barricades in ungated sections,” the Blue Ridge Parkway reported in a news release.
“Due to the severity of the storm and anticipated widespread impacts, including potential delays in emergency response, winter recreation is strongly discouraged. The Parkway is not salted and is minimally plowed, so emergency vehicles will not be able to easily or safely access those in need of assistance.”
Snow, sleet and freezing rain are forecast in the region, along with gusts of 30 mph. Ice accumulations could top a half an inch on surfaces, the National Weather Service says.
Blue Ridge Parkway officials expect the ice and wind gusts will bring down limbs and entire trees, adding to the road hazards. The parkway covers 469 miles and much of it is mountainous and lined with forest land.
“Closures are expected to remain in place until staff can safely assess road conditions and clear any storm debris,” the park said.
