Charlotte set another heat record before cooler temps barged in, NWS says
Charlotte set another hot weather record before cooler temps barged in again on Saturday, National Weather Service meteorologists said.
The city broke the daily mark of 86 degrees Friday afternoon, according to the NWS office in Greer, South Carolina.
The record for March 27 stood at 85 degrees since 1950, NWS meteorologists said on social media.
We all packed the shorts and short sleeves away again with a high of only 47 degrees at Charlotte Douglas International Airport at 11 a.m. Saturday, according to the NWS Charlotte forecast page.
Charlotte also set daily high temperature records on March 10 and 11, The Charlotte Observer previously reported.
Temperatures to quickly rebound, forecasters say
Temperatures are forecast to quickly rebound, with expected highs near 60 on Saturday, 66 on Sunday, 76 on Monday, 80 on Tuesday and 82 on Wednesday under mostly sunny skies.
Rain is likely Thursday and Friday, dropping respective highs to near 76 and 69, the forecast showed.
Red flag warning
Due to increased wildfire risk, the N.C. Forest Service issued a ban on all open burning and canceled all burning permits statewide effective 6 p.m. Saturday, until further notice.
Charlotte and the rest of the state were under an NWS Red Flag Warning for fire until 11 p.m. Saturday.
“A combination of strong winds, low relative humidity, and dry vegetation can contribute to extreme fire behavior,” NWS meteorologists said on social media.
“Any fire that develops will catch and spread quickly,” forecasters said. “Outdoor burning is not recommended.”
Avoid using fire pits and outdoor fireplaces, the Waxhaw Fire Department said. Don’t toss cigarettes on the ground or start equipment that could produce sparks, officials said.
“Spring wildfire season is here, and conditions can change faster than you think,” the N.C. Forest Service said.
