Weather alert affecting the Piedmont region early Tuesday evening, says the NWS

A weather alert was issued by the NWS Raleigh NC on Tuesday at 3:53 p.m. for thunderstorms and showers until 4:45 p.m. The alert is for Forsyth, Guilford, Alamance, Orange, Davidson and Randolph counties.
Residents may experience wind gusts of up to 50 mph.
"At 3:50 p.m., Doppler radar indicated showers and thunderstorms stretching from Lexington to Greensboro, moving east at 35 mph," says the NWS. "Gusty winds could knock down tree limbs and blow around unsecured objects."
Locations impacted by the alert include Greensboro, High Point, Burlington, Lexington, Graham, Hillsborough, Randleman, Thomasville, Kernersville and Mebane. This includes the following highways: Interstate 85 between Mile Markers 33 and 131. Interstate 40 between Mile Markers 132 and 161, and between Mile Markers 203 and 226. Interstate 73 between Mile Markers 81 and 103. Interstate 74 between Mile Markers 60 and 79.
The NWS adds, "If outdoors, consider seeking shelter inside a building."
This alert is in effect until 4:45 p.m.
Actions to take when lightning threat is imminent
Lightning hits the United States approximately 25 million times annually. The majority of these strikes happen during the summer, causing around 20 fatalities each year, according to the NWS. The likelihood of lightning increases as a thunderstorm gets closer and reaches its highest point when the storm is directly overhead. This risk decreases as the storm moves away.

- To reduce the chance of being struck by lightning, when venturing outside, have a plan to get to a safer area.

- Wait 30 minutes after the last lightning or thunder before going back outside.
If finding indoor shelter is not an option:
- Avoid open fields, hill peaks, or ridge tops.
- Stay away from tall, isolated trees or other tall objects. If you are in a forest, stay near a lower stand of trees.
- If you are with a group, fan out to stop the current from transmitting between members.
- If you are camping in an open space, choose a valley, ravine, or low area for your campsite. Remember, tents do not shield you from lightning.
- Maintain a safe distance from water, wet items, and metal objects. Water and metal do not attract lightning, yet they conduct electricity efficiently.

- While on the road - Opt for the middle lanes and remain on higher ground. Rainwater tends to gather along the road edges.
