An extreme heat watch was issued by the NWS Wakefield VA on Wednesday at 1:58 p.m. valid for Friday between 10 a.m. and 8 p.m. The watch is for Western Currituck as well as Northampton, Hertford, Gates, Pasquotank, Camden, Bertie, Chowan and Perquimans counties.
The NWS informs, "Dangerously hot conditions with heat index values up to 111 degrees possible."
"Heat related illnesses increase significantly during extreme heat and high humidity events. Hot temperatures and high humidity may cause heat illnesses," describes the NWS.
This watch is in effect until Friday at 8 p.m.
During heat waves, consider the following tips from the NWS
- Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of fluids.
- Find cool shelter: Stay in an air-conditioned room.
- Check on others: Stay out of the sun, and make sure to check up on relatives and neighbors.
- Child and pet safety: Never leave young children and pets unattended in vehicles, especially when car interiors can reach lethal temperatures within minutes.
- Be cautious outdoors: Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside.
- Find the right time: Consider rescheduling strenuous activities to early morning or evening if possible.
- Know the red flags: Understand the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
- Dress for comfort: Wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing to stay cool.
For a safer outdoor work environment, follow the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA)'s guidance by scheduling regular rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned places. If anyone shows signs of heat illness, promptly move them to a cool, shaded area. In an emergency, call 911.
