Heat advisory affecting Eastern North Carolina Thursday

At 1:58 p.m. on Wednesday, the NWS Wakefield VA issued a heat advisory valid for Thursday between 10 a.m. and 8 p.m. The advisory is for Western Currituck as well as Northampton, Hertford, Gates, Pasquotank, Camden, Bertie, Chowan and Perquimans counties.
The NWS informs, "Heat index values up to 106 degrees expected."
"Heat related illnesses increase significantly during extreme heat and high humidity events. Hot temperatures and high humidity may cause heat illnesses," explains the NWS.
This advisory is in effect until Thursday at 8 p.m.

- Be mindful outdoors: Take extra precautions when working or spending time outside.
- Optimal Timing: When possible, reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening.
- Recognize warning signs: Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
- Dress for comfort: Wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing to stay cool.
To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. In an emergency, call 911.
