Heat advisory issued for Eastern North Carolina for Thursday

On Wednesday at 3:10 p.m. the NWS Newport/Morehead City NC released a heat advisory valid for Thursday between 11 a.m. and 8 p.m. The advisory is for Mainland Dare, Mainland Hyde, Northern Outer Banks, Ocracoke Island and Hatteras Island as well as Washington, Tyrrell and Beaufort counties.
The NWS informs, "Heat index values up to 106 degrees expected."
"Hot temperatures and high humidity may cause heat illnesses," says the NWS.
This advisory is in effect until Thursday at 8 p.m.
Ways to stay safe in the heat according to the NWS
- Stay hydrated: Make sure to drink plenty of fluids.
- Stay in an air-conditioned room.
- Avoid direct sun exposure: Protect yourself and check on vulnerable relatives and neighbors.
- Prioritize child and pet safety: Be vigilant about never leaving young children and pets in vehicles without supervision, especially during periods of intense heat, as car interiors can quickly become extremely hot.
- Be cautious outdoors: Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside.
- Optimal Timing: When possible, reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening.
- Familiarize yourself with warning signs: Know the symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
- Stay cool with clothing: Select lightweight and loose-fitting outfits for enhanced comfort.
To minimize risks during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) advises incorporating frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas. If someone experiences heat-related symptoms, promptly relocate them to a cool and shaded spot. In case of an emergency, dial 911.
