Strong storm system could bring weekend snow to Charlotte region, forecasters say

The National Weather Service says the Charlotte region could see its first snow accumulations over the weekend.

Chances are greatest Saturday into Sunday as a strong storm system moves in from the west.

Current forecasts call for a 30% chance of snow Saturday from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 40% overnight into Sunday.

The low Saturday night is expected to be 24 degrees and there is a 50% chance of precipitation, forecasters say.

Temperatures will rise to 38 degrees Sunday — with “a 30% chance of snow showers.”

Freezing temperatures will return Sunday night, with a low of 24 degrees, so anything on roads will re-freeze overnight.

WBTV meteorologist Leigh Brock says there is still plenty of time for the storm front path to shift, so questions remain over how much of a wintry mix Charlotte might get.

“There is a disturbance moving this way. There is also cold air to work with. When and where all the factors meet up will determine what we get here in the WBTV viewing area,” Brock reported Jan. 11.

“There is at least the possibility of rain/ snow for most of us. Until models come into better agreement, we won’t know what exactly things will look like where you are.”
