Introducing NC Opinions: The North Carolina opinion newsletter

A global pandemic. A transformational election. A newly urgent and long overdue reckoning on race.

2020 has brought what feels like a decade’s worth of significant events, and there’s no shortage of opinions in North Carolina about the news. Beginning this week, we’re happy to make those opinions easier to find.

Starting Thursday, we’re launching NC Opinions, a weekly newsletter of Opinion content you’ll find only in the Charlotte Observer, Raleigh News & Observer and Durham Herald-Sun. That content includes editorials and columns from members of the Editorial Board, as well as cartoons from Kevin Siers, our Pulitzer Prize winning cartoonist.

The editorial boards of the Charlotte Observer and Raleigh News & Observer are proud to be part of the conversations people are having across North Carolina. Last year, we combined into one board to provide fuller and more diverse opinion content to our readers. Our cities and towns share many challenges, from racial inequities to affordable housing. There’s a lot we can learn from each other and with each other, and our editorial board will continue to provide commentary and analysis on issues important to the Triangle and Charlotte region.

But conversations are about more than our opinions, which is why we offer more diversity on our pages than ever. That includes three contributing columnists who offer a conservative lens on local, state and national issues, as well as columnists in Charlotte and the Triangle who speak on race and equity with progressive and moderate perspectives.

You’ll see those writers in our Thursday newsletter, as well as op-eds and letters from community leaders, lawmakers, members of the academic community, and regular readers who have something to say. We’re pretty sure you’ll like some of what you read, and we’re certain you won’t agree with all of it.

That’s a good thing. Our editorial boards have long believed that regardless of which way you might lean ideologically, opinions should be challenged. We do that each day on our pages, and we’re happy to bring those conversations each week with NC Opinions. It’s easy to sign up for the newsletter in Charlotte, Raleigh or Durham. We hope you join us.

Peter St. Onge is NC Opinion editor and editor of the Charlotte Observer, Raleigh News & Observer and Durham Herald-Sun editorial pages.
