What N.C. lawmakers should take from Donald Trump’s remarks on HB 2

AP

Donald Trump was asked this morning about North Carolina’s anti-LGBT law, HB 2.

We think he said it should be repealed. But we’re not certain. You decide.

ABC News reporter Candace Smith reports:

Trump is clearly saying that transgender individuals should use the bathroom in which they feel comfortable, which HB 2 doesn’t allow.

That’s how it works at Trump tower:

Trump did not, however, explicitly say that HB 2 should be repealed. But “leave it the way that it is” seems to be referring to pre-HB 2, not the way it is now.

It’s a bit of Trump’s less-than-conservative worldview peeking out again (Ted Cruz would call these “New York values” – a phrase he surely regretted this week.) Trump’s thoughts won’t move the HB 2 discussion in North Carolina, but it’s a reminder that N.C. lawmakers are increasingly out-of-step on this topic.
