In response to “I-77 toll deal could hinder more lanes” (May 5):

In I-77 toll game, time for DOT to fold

The N.C. Department of Transportation won’t say anything because of “pending litigation.”

I-77 Mobility Partners refers all questions to N.C. DOT.

Cintra watches in amusement, and perhaps simultaneous disdain, as their puppets prance around the stage of transparency, for the boondoggle shows signs of waning.

To paraphrase Kenny Rogers: “Don’t count your money while sitting at the table.”

My advice: N.C. DOT, get out of the game while you still can. If not, you will lose more than dollars – your integrity.

In response to “Rich highjacking politics in U.S., just like they have in Mexico” (May 5 Forum):

I worry more about professional politicians who push an agenda

Forum writer Alan J. Hoyle wants us to believe that our political system has been hijacked by billionaires.

I would agree that we do have too much private and union money driving political agendas. However, the real problem we face is professional politicians pushing agendas that drive their own re-election campaigns in both parties.

The other problems with our political system are that we suffer from an ill informed electorate, voter apathy, and news media bias.

In response to “Don’t tell doctors they can’t ask patients about gun ownership” (May 5 Forum):

Asking about guns opens door wider on government control

Since cars and swimming pools result in more deaths annually than guns, shouldn’t doctors also be asking patients what model car they drive and if they have a pool?

But those items don’t pose a threat to the liberal left’s agenda to have everyone depend on government.

Having doctors ask questions concerning gun ownership is nothing short of a backdoor way to create a national gun registry that one day could be used to sweep up those pesky guns that deliver true independence from an overbearing government away.

In response to “A burrito, please; hold the science” (May 5):

Time to stop dismissing science, use it wisely instead

The writer is a retired Mecklenburg County Health Department environmental program manager.

Your editorial on how science is summarily dismissed was on the money.

It really doesn’t seem to matter whether it’s climate change, GMOs, immunizations against well documented contagious human diseases, or approved and judicious use of pesticides against disease-carrying mosquitoes. Decisions by Americans, and others, are too often made based on politics, economics, religion, media frenzy, or just plain ignorance.

We live in a time of incredible knowledge and scientific advancement. I sure hope more of us start using it wisely.

I’ll raise a burrito to Chipotlein their battle against GMOs

My problem with GMOs is not that they are not safe to eat. (Goodness knows the FDA approved “stuff” we shovel down our gullets without a care.)

My concern is that Monsanto and others are looking to have their bar code on every single plant that pops out of the ground.

Using “less pesticides” will surely be “only our pesticides,” and heaven help the natural plant or pollinator that ventures into the GMO Selling Zone.

I’m eating at Chipotle today, and will raise a burrito to unbought science.

In response to “Curry’s circles of greatness carry him to NBA MVP” (May 5):

There are lessons for all in Curry’s climb to superstardom

It is still amazing to me that all the recruiters and big-time college coaches – aside from Davidson’s Bob McKillop – missed on Stephen Curry.

Everyone could see his size, or lack thereof, but it’s a lot harder to measure heart and work ethic. Steph’s ascent to superstardom is a great lesson for all of us.

With faith, hard work, and belief in oneself you can accomplish anything, despite what others think you’re capable of.
