Host the RNC, show the world that Charlotte is open to all

Be world-class and host the RNC

I am absolutely astonished at the immaturity of the City Council refusing to endorse holding the RNC in Charlotte.

World-class city? Not with this narrow-minded, childish reaction from the likes of LaWana Mayfield.

Politics aside, holding the RNC in Charlotte is a good business decision that will most likely bring in a lot of business and add to the economy. Let’s show the world that Charlotte is open to all. That’s what a world-class city should be.

By the way, I am not a Trump supporter.

Don’t host Donald Trump, his party

Our city is so inclusive and collaborative, our mayor wants to welcome the most racist/white supremacist, most divisive and disrespectful president in our lifetime, to help celebrate our values.

I’m all for the liberty and free speech but when you’re using your liberty to reduce mine and that of people I love, and your speech disrespects nearly everyone, then expect some resistance.

So for a few dollars our city is willing to collaborate with someone who opposes nearly all the values this city claims to represent. Yet, another shining example of why so many businesses are welcomed here, yet the people in most need get left behind and why we’re ranked last in upward mobility.

Charlotte – a city of collaborative contradiction.

On RNC, I’m betting on a Vegas win

Jon Meacham’s new book, “The Soul of America,” describes the yin and yang of America’s moral struggle. What an apt metaphor for the choice of venue for the 2020 Republican National Convention!

Charlotte offers “Pray for 45” T-shirts sold by Franklin Graham and an affordable housing problem. Las Vegas, on the other hand, beckons with a never-ending party and the promise, “what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas!”

How can they resist? I am betting on Vegas.

Evangelicals being played by Trump

In response to “Franklin Graham urges evangelicals to buy his pro-Trump T-shirts” (July 10):

These T-shirts cite a reference from 1 Timothy that encourages prayer and thanksgiving for those in governmental authority.

In understanding scripture, “context is everything.” When the Apostle Paul made this statement he was referring to the Roman Empire. He supported the Roman government because it had protected him from violence and was tolerant of Christianity. But that changed. The government began persecuting Christians and had Paul beheaded.

The book of Revelation reveals the disdain Christians had for the government and its leaders.

It’s fine to pray for Trump but don’t expect change. He is what he has always been; narcissistic, divisive and corrupt.

When will evangelicals begin to realize Trump is “playing” them?

Force a balanced budget within 7 years

In response to Our View “Which party is better on debt? Trick question” (July 8 Editorial):

Thanks for the editorial on how the US federal debt is spiraling way out of control. If nothing is done, and soon, there will be massive poverty in this country that will rob today’s young people of a bright future.

Politicians and candidates who say they are for a balanced budget amendment to the Constitution are just skirting the issue – they know this is unlikely to happen.

A more reasonable solution is to force a balanced budget within seven years, and then begin paying down the debt by budget surpluses. As the Observer editorial requests, please contact your candidates and request specific answers for this horrific, but largely ignored, problem.

Strzok hearing was a political clown show

The latest approval rating for Congress that I can find is 18 percent. After watching part of the Peter Strzok hearing, I think our Congress is grossly overrated!

The majority party members of the two committees treated FBI agent Strzok indignantly. Criminals in court receive much more respect! It was obvious from the opening salvo that the proceedings were merely a political clown show.

When will all the clowns we send to Congress devote appropriate time and effort to things like healthcare, protecting children, solving the immigration debacle and gun violence, and stop this sophomoric behavior intended solely to protect a president who is chummy with foreign dictators while insulting and berating our allies? Eighteen percent of Americans have been bumfuzzled!
