Why aren’t boys raised to be husbands?
I support women being prepared
In response to “Harris preached career isn’t women’s healthiest pursuit” (July 6):
The reason girls are taught from grade school to have a career in mind is the same reason boys are taught “to grow up and be independent of anyone or anything.” Husbands die, become disabled, leave, divorce, abuse, and/or fail to support their families. Women must always be prepared to support themselves. How many women are forced into low-paying jobs and night school because they weren’t prepared “to be independent?”
As a society we’d be back to the day when economic security totally dictated a woman’s choice in a husband – or whether to have one.
Why aren’t boys taught their supreme pursuit should be as husbands and fathers? Doesn’t the Bible say men are to love their wives “sacrificially”?

President Trump should declare a side
In response to “Trump questions US intel findings, sides with Putin” (July 17) and related articles:
As somebody who actually remembers the Watergate hearings and our president resigning in disgrace, I can assure you that Richard Nixon is rolling over in his grave saying “I never did anything like this.” Donald Trump should either resign or declare Russian the U.S. national language so we all know what we’re dealing with.

Trump’s dream for America isn’t mine
The sublime dream of President Trump is to be part of a trio of autocratic governments dominating the world, China, Russia and the United States. I do not think his dream will succeed.
He forgets that the Russian and Chinese people are accustomed to be told how to think. Tell an American that he or she can not give an opinion and the earth will shake. Even his most faithful supporters will rebel if they are told that opening their mouth is not allowed, that freedoms of speech and religion are buried , and that the Constitution never was.
The American people are not accustomed to living under the thumb of an autocrat. No, Mr. President, forget your impossible dream. It will never happen, not in this free American land.

NATO is a protector we still need
As we witness the apparent decline of U.S. support for the functionality of NATO, the focus is on a possible weakening of resistance against Russian aggression and expansionism, which the current administration downplays. But the value of NATO extends beyond stonewalling the threat of an old post WWII adversary. It includes protecting alliance members from themselves.
Do we not remember that bad things happen when European states build strong militaries directed by radical nationalism? Only this time, nukes are in the mix. Do we really want to go down this dangerous road? No, America should stay very strong in NATO. A livable future may well depend on it.

RNC complaints are hypocrisy-filled
I have been watching the news coverage of the city council meeting discussing having the RNC here if offered since the mayor already made the bid. I am an independent and it does not matter to me, but all of the resistance from people who preach tolerance and condemn Trump and the GOP for intolerance troubles me a bit.
Are these people so ignorant that they cannot see that they are, in fact, intolerant, and no better than those who they condemn? Such people should never again publicly address intolerance; to do so is pure hypocrisy.

The RNC can do better than Charlotte
In response to “Council says yes to hosting RNC” (July 17):
Contrary to tradition, Mayor Vi Lyles says that she will not give a welcoming address at the RNC convention. The message to the RNC should be clear: We want your money but you are not welcome here. I hope the RNC hears that message and decides to go elsewhere.
