Bishop exemplifies what’s wrong with politicians today

Bishop needs to tell truth about Gab

In response to “NC lawmaker says he’s being ‘smeared’ for investment in racist site” (Nov. 1):

Like so many weak-kneed politicians today, instead of taking responsibility state Sen. Dan Bishop claims he is being “smeared” by those pointing out his links to Gab, the extreme right-wing website site that may have inspired the Pittsburgh synagogue shooter.

Bishop is exactly what is wrong with our political discourse today. We need leaders who have the guts and the vision to inspire kindness and good faith, rather than fear, hatred and division.

Ryan should back Trump on citizenship

In response to “America is a nation of immigrants” (Oct. 31 Opinion):

Illegal immigration is a huge issue with conservatives. GOP voters feel that we lose America if mobs can break in line and just walk in.

Donald Trump is trying to have a discussion to seek a curb on birthright citizenship, which Paul Ryan and many in the Washington establishment bitterly oppose.

For once, it would be nice to have these moderate Republicans back our president and help him implement his agenda.

Trump isn’t PC and I’m OK with that

Candidate Trump told us what he would do if elected. A Google search for a list of his accomplishments shows that he has been delivering what he promised – from low unemployment, increasing jobs, improving the business environment, cutting business-killing regulations, tax cuts, national security, better trade deals, opening dialogue with North Korea, and more.

He is successful because he is focusing on fixing America’s problems, rather than being a politically correct, lead-from-behind, figurehead president, as has been common practice in the “swamp.”

It’s about more than pocketbook issues

Linda J. Brooks

Do you people hear yourselves? Because “the economy is doing great, the jobless rate is at an all-time low, and the stock market is doing well” we’re encouraged to overlook the heinous behavior of our president.

He spews hatred and lies, encourages violence, worries more about his hair than the victims of murder, and all you seem to care about is your pocketbook?

Mr. Trump was speaking at a convention in Indianapolis when he joked that he almost cancelled his appearance – not because of the mass shooting in Pittsburgh, but due to how he looked.

Get off Trump’s back, let him do his job

In my lifetime I have seen three great presidents – Harry Truman, a Democrat, Ronald Reagan, a Republican, and now Donald Trump, another Republican.

All three were disliked by the opposition party and basically for the same reasons: They did what they promised.

If only these liberals would get off Trump’s back and let him be president we would all be better off.

How to avoid another school shooting

Forum letters about the Butler High shooting have focused on the lack of metal detectors and poor communication by CMS.

Isn’t is obvious that without the gun there would not have been a shooting at Butler? Maybe that sounds too simplistic for us to grasp. Why was the shooter able to get access to a deadly weapon so easily?

How long will it take and how many students and others will die before we come the recognize the real cause of these shootings is easy access to guns?

Thanks for 38 years, Charlotte Cafe

Wednesday the Charlotte Cafe at Park Road Shopping Center closed forever. Due to increasing rent, Jimmy Roupas said goodbye to patrons he served for 38 years.

Monday, I witnessed a moving tribute as customers filled his restaurant one last time. Tears flowed as they paid their final bills, snapped photos, and hugged Jimmy, his wife, Mary, and Johnny, who bused tables daily with his enduring smile.

We are losing a business rooted in Charlotte and with it a part of ourselves. As a Charlotte native and loyal patron, I thank Jimmy and his family for nourishing our bodies and souls for all these years. I am grateful the Arboretum location will continue the tradition.
