Observer Forum: Letters to the editor 06.30.15
In response to “Get government out of the marriage business, it's a religious ceremony” (June 29 Forum):
Why get government out of marriage?
Contrary to what Forum writer J.R. Martin implies, civil marriage pre-dates religious involvement in marriage ceremonies by centuries, and there is nothing wrong with having a judge sanction the bond between two people instead of a priest.
The idea that churches should have exclusive control over marriage is restrictive and unacceptable.

N.C. Republicans are the new tax-and-spend politicians
Isn’t it ironic that the Republicans in Raleigh keep raising taxes while speaking of tax cuts?
Senators Bob Rucho and Phil Berger have figured out that they can increase revenue by cutting deductions. The net result, however, is the same.
Whatever happened to “tax and spend” liberals? I think this moniker now belongs to the N.C. GOP!

Our country needs to acknowledge its gun problem
Our beloved country is like an alcoholic who before he/she can be helped must realize that he or she has a problem: Hi, my name is (fill in the blank) and I am an alcoholic.
Hi, we are the United States of America and WE have a gun problem.

Let’s talk NRA’s role, not flag’s, in Charleston shooting
As a Civil War history buff I believe the current frenzy to remove Confederate flags and memorials is a mistake and an inappropriate over-reaction to yet another U.S. gun massacre tragedy.
Instead of trying to erase history, we should be addressing the real issue: easy access to firearms.
Let’s talk about the NRA’s role in promoting gun proliferation in the U.S. Let’s repeal the Second Amendment.

Honor our country, not those who wanted to destroy it
I find it incredulous that as we prepare to celebrate the birth of our great nation we are debating whether the battle flag of the insurgents who tried to destroy it should have a place of honor in our country.

Time for Congress to do its job; act on gun control now
How else do you explain our total lack of gun control?
People must act or nothing will be done to stop the mass murder of innocent people. Tell your Congressional representatives to enact laws now that make sense or expect to be defeated in the next election.
We must all take responsibility and enact gun control laws – or expect more of what happened in Charleston and Sandy Hook.

Is this really what we have to choose from for president?
Lindsey Graham says he will have “rotating first ladies.”
Rick Perry suggested the Charleston shootings were an “accident” brought on by prescription medications.
Mike Huckabee said he wished someone would have told him in high school about being transgender so that he could “shower with the girls.”
Duck Dynasty supports Bobby Jindal. Hillary is running because the Dems have no one else who is willing to run, because they don’t need the grief.
Is this the best this country has?

Curry and Davis families great ambassadors for our city
Charlotte is very fortunate to have two of the best professional sports families reside in our city.
Thomas Davis was recognized by the NFL and given the Walter Payton Man of the Year award for giving back to your community.
The Dell Curry Foundation has been working with Charlotte youth for over 15 years.
When I run into either Thomas Davis or Dell Curry, both are role models in being humble and gracious. Thank you, and your families, for being approachable, and for all you give to our community.
