GOP deceived N.C. voters on budget
In response to “Three Democrats back budget in final 37-13 vote” (Sept. 17):
The same Republicans who were elected after campaigning for lower taxes and smaller government are now planning to tax services that have never been taxed in the history of the state and distribute the money to other counties.
I can only hope those who voted for these misleading socialists need major auto repairs as soon as these taxes are put into effect.

I saw Cannon factor article as insulting
In response to “Cannon factor in primary, some say” (Sept. 17):
This article is an insult to the intelligence of the African-American community.
If a white person votes for a black candidate, to you, he is a hero and open-minded.
Yet, a black man voting for a white man or women is out of ordinary.
If we want to be another Atlanta, why can’t we act like Atlanta where there is a black majority but people live in harmony?
V.H. Patel, Cornelius
I vote on political stands, not on race
My voting decision for mayor was based on the candidates’ political stands, opinions and demeanors, none of which had anything to do with the color of their skin or their sex.
Maybe, just maybe, those were the same reasons other people used to vote.
Not everyone is influenced by ghosts of the past, but rather by prospects and hopes for the future.

Here’s my pick for GOP debate winner
In response to “Fiorina, others throw jabs at Trump first” (Sept. 17):
The real winner in Wednesday night’s GOP debate? Ronald Reagan.

Need immigration reform, not walls
Our southern border security is the strongest it has been in 40 years and apprehensions at the border are at an all time high.
What’s needed is comprehensive immigration reform to strengthen our immigration courts and the agencies that deal with this issue worldwide.
The cost to reform our system may be upwards of $1 billion. Ironically, those who complain most about illegal immigration are unwilling to pay to fix our broken system.
Joseph J. Salerno, Charlotte
‘No walls’ is a reckless ideology
In response to “Stop building walls to keep migrants out” (Sept. 13 Forum):
I will be happy to build several of the now-trendy “tiny houses” in Forum writer Lorraine Stark’s backyard if she will agree to sponsor, house, and be held responsible for illegal immigrants of my choice.
To proponents of open borders and “no walls,” I propose that actions speak louder than words.
Expecting others to fund and manage your reckless ideals is hypocritical.

Common ground on Planned Parenthood
In response to “House hearings start on Planned Parenthood” (Sept. 13) and related articles:
Stop the tantrums over Planned Parenthood.
Sacrificing women’s lives is not the way to go about changing a practice you don’t like.
The common ground between those who favor and those who oppose choice is preventing unwanted pregnancy. That is a large and important part of Planned Parenthood’s mission.
The argument that there are other ways to get those services is specious. The rich will always find services, but there are not other services for middle and low income women.
Stop sacrificing women for your ideology, period.
Cherie Clark, Charlotte
Tacky? Not how I see old coliseum seats
In response to “Bojangles’ Coliseum sells seats to remember” (Sept. 10):
The writer was organist at the coliseum from 1956-2003.
I am so sick and tired of fans and writers referring to the discarded seats at Bojangles’ Coliseum as those “tacky orange wooden seats”!
They should know those seats are solid maple, installed in 1955 when people’s bottoms weren’t as big as they are now.
What a shame to replace good wood with plastic that is not biodegradable!
If folks don’t stop gaining weight, the next generation will probably demand beanbag chairs!
