Carson wrong man to be president

To my utter dismay I have not yet heard George Will lump Republican presidential candidate Ben Carson into the family of “bloviating ignoramuses,” a group into which he accurately threw Donald Trump in 2012.

Carson amply demonstrated his depth of ignorance and lack of sagacity a couple days ago when he, essentially, ignorantly proclaimed that a Muslim does not qualify to become president of the United States.

If this does not expose this man as being profoundly ill prepared for the presidency of this nation, then I do not know what does.

A good neurosurgeon does not necessarily produce a good politician.

Can’t have it both ways on Constitution

In response to Our View “Carson dismisses 3 million Americans” (Sept. 23 Editorial):

Christianity is a religion. Islam is a theocracy.

If the Charlotte Observer, ACLU, and People for the American Way are consistent with their arguments for the separation of church and state, by definition they should not allow a practicing Muslim to be president.

But then again, in truth, a practicing Muslim could not pledge fealty to the Constitution.

Make up your mind, as you can’t have it both ways.

James B. Hall, Charlotte

Appalled by teen Trump supporter

In response to “A teen’s ugly rant on the president” (Sept. 22 Viewpoint):

I find it appalling that anyone would take seriously the political rantings of a 13-year-old, but even more appalling that anyone would take Donald Trump seriously as a candidate for president.

His rants are the equivalent of a 13-year-old.

C’mon folks; where are the adults, or are we turning into a nation of non-thinkers?

Barriers needed at Crowders Mountain

In response to “1 hiker dies after fall at Crowders Mountain Park” (Sept. 22):

Regulations should be put in place at Crowders Mountain that say “hikers must stay at least 4 feet from the edge.”

Measures such as adding protective fences or another barrier would heavily protect against fatalities.

And if this doesn’t work, just ban climbing to the top outright.

EPA’s ozone rules would hurt N.C.

The state’s economy continues to struggle. Recent headlines about the global economy and the stock market add a new layer of uncertainty.

The last thing we need is for the government to make it harder for small businesses to compete against their larger counterparts.

Yet that’s what would happen if the EPA’s new ozone regulations were implemented. Burdening our economy with $140 billion in annual compliance costs would have a disastrous effect on the enterprises that create jobs for so many in our community.

The EPA should reconsider the timing and severity of its ozone rules for the good of the economy here in North Carolina and all across America.

Cruz just protecting religious liberty

Forum writer Geoffrey Planer’s statement that “(Ted) Cruz’s insurgent political gamesmanship makes him a much more dangerous threat to this country than any terrorist” is way over the top. (“Cruz asking Davis to defy Constitution,” Sept. 21 Forum)

Terrorists kidnap, rape, kill, and destroy innocent people. They hate Israel, the U.S., and any religion that is different from Islam.

They are a much more dangerous threat to our country than Sen. Cruz and any other politician who takes our First Amendment right of religious liberty seriously.

Tom Creech, Charlotte

Writer sees justice through liberal prism

In response to “The Republican who is Hillary Clinton’s best bet” (Sept. 23 Viewpoint):

Op-ed columnist Francis Wilkinson’s suggestion that FBI director James Comey being Republican has changed how law enforcement is meted out at the Justice Department is rich.

Did he miss the Martin case in Sanford, Fla.; the Brown case in Ferguson, Mo.; or the Gray case in Baltimore?

Yes, I blew coffee out of my nose too!
