N.C. Senate right to ban sanctuary cities

In response to “Immigration bill clears N.C. Senate” (Sept. 29):

The N.C. Senate’s decision to ban sanctuary cities should be supported by all voters in this state.

Sanctuary cities have become nothing more than havens for illegal immigrants and criminals to feel safe and secure despite breaking the law.

The heinous murder of a young woman in San Francisco points out the fallacy of these ill-conceived sanctuary city laws.

Our duty to protect all of our legal citizens and residents is paramount in a society where law and order must prevail.

Sad about negative turn in campaign

I committed early on to support Jennifer Roberts for mayor. Then Dan Clodfelter changed his mind and decided to run.

Although both candidates are very qualified, I voted for Jennifer and support her effort.

Monday, I received a “below-the-belt” campaign flier from the Clodfelter campaign attacking Jennifer on education. It is totally without context and worthy only of what might come from a Trump-type candidate.

I’m not angry, just a bit sad.

Trump tax plan unleashes capitalism

In response to “Trump tax plan long on ideas, short on details” (Sept. 28):

Americans have been talking about tax reform for years with no action.

Regardless of your stance on Donald Trump, his tax plan makes sense. It is simple, it lowers taxes for everyone, and promotes domestic growth.

The only way out of the mess we are in is to grow our economy.

Let capitalism work instead of the socialist trend we have been on for the last seven years.

N.C. slush funds will throttle democracy

In response to “Special-interest slush funds coming to N.C.?” (Sept. 27 Editorial):

GOP leaders in the N.C. legislature are developing slush funds for their personal direction. This is an elite group of Republicans who want to control their party’s finances and direction without the hindrance of democratic oversight.

The ousting of Speaker John Boehner by extremist congressional Republicans shows that a vocal minority of conservatives feel they can rule a branch of Congress without having to acknowledge any opposing viewpoint.

The victims of these conservative temper tantrums are as always “we the people.”

Cherry decision forces the poor out

In response to “Big Cherry project approved in revote” (Sept. 29):

What is happening to the Cherry neighborhood is great – for the houses.

The people have not been upgraded. They have simply been moved.

We need to remember. They have not gone away. They still exist.

Don’t call me a ‘low information voter’

In response to “Trump has no real plan, don’t elect him” (Sept. 28 Forum):

I take exception to the comparison of President Obama with Donald Trump as a “smack-talking seventh grader.”

This president is highly intelligent. Disagreeing with his policies is no reason to insult his intelligence. Also, his supporters should not be characterized as “low information voters” simply because the writer does not like him.

I am a well-educated voter who made informed decisions when I voted for Obama in 2008 and 2012. I am sure I am not the exception.

We will disagree about policy, but we must refrain from maligning the character of people with whom we disagree.

No to death penalty; yes to second chances

In response to “A misguided repeal of the death penalty” (Sept. 27 Opinion):

Both Nebraska legislators are misguided on death penalty legislation.

While the death penalty should be abolished, it shouldn’t be replaced with life without parole.

A life sentence without opportunity for parole is another form of death by the state. It is cruel, expensive, reduces our humanity, and is inhumane by not affording a person a second chance.

By abolishing the death penalty and life without parole, we can be the humane people we profess to be.
