Obamacare a failure come home to roost

I was opposed to Obamacare as an overly expensive, poorly written and unsustainable law that does not achieve its goal of affordable health care for all.

It was legislation from hell that is now coming home to roost.

United Healthare says it expects to lose $600 million on it in 2015 and 2016 and is considering withdrawing from the program.

Push politicians, insurance companies, hospitals, and pharmaceutical companies aside and let people without great financial gain be appointed to come up with a plan that works for all Americans, and not just special interests.

Speaker Ryan feeds the fear mongering

House Speaker Paul Ryan demands that President Obama pause accepting Muslim Syrian refugees until Obama can certify that they are not terrorists.

While he is waiting on his demands, I suggest Mr. Ryan get with the National Rifle Association and find a way to certify that no more angry white guys will shoot up grade schools, movie theaters and churches.

There is a far greater danger of terrorist attacks from angry white guys in this country than from ISIS terrorists.

But then, Mr. Ryan and his posse are more interested in fear mongering than facts.

Trump shows gaping ignorance of history

Donald Trump has called for requiring Muslims in the United States to register in a national database.

This shows his gaping ignorance or complete disregard for the lessons of 20th Century history and the Constitution.

If Mr. Trump does not know or care about how Germany identified its religious minority 77 years ago, I hope that Observer readers will.

Voters need to listen to what Mr. Trump says and ask themselves if it comports with American values, constitutional guarantees, and the lessons of history.

U.S. already has big refugee burden

Take President Obama’s security guards away and see if he still wants the Syrian refugees to move into the USA.

U.S. taxpayers have too big of a burden right now without taking on more refugees. Let all foreign countries police their own, like the USA does.

This will be another Vietnam – we don’t know who is good and who is bad!

Greater threat is homegrown terrorists

In response to “McCrory trying to protect us; Price isn’t” (Nov. 22 Forum):

Forum writer Dickie Benzie feels safer with Gov. Pat McCrory’s stand of not taking Syrian refugees.

But don’t get too comfortable…

First, there have been twice as many terrorist attacks since 9/11 by “homegrown terrorists” than jihadists.

Second, Congress has been sitting on legislation since the Bush administration that would prevent those on the no-fly list from buying a gun.

Politicians and some in the media love to sensationalize and fear-monger, but they leave out important facts.

Keep Pfizer, others from leaving the U.S.

In response to “$160B deal to combine Pfizer and Allergan raises outcry” (Nov. 23 CharlotteObserver.com):

Pfizer is moving its headquarters to Ireland so it can pay the United States less in taxes.

I have a solution to get them to change their mind.

Require all non-U.S. drug companies to sell their drugs for government programs such as Medicare, Medicaid, government employees, the armed forces, etc. at cost-plus, just like defense contractors.

Revoke their privilege to gouge the American taxpayer. I suspect Pfizer’s reaction would be “Oops, sorry, we’ll stay and pay taxes.”

Thanks, Théoden, for the lesson learned

In response to “A holiday prayer for the Panthers” (Nov. 21):

I want to thank Théoden Janes for his column for three reasons: the rhyming words in the paragraphs, a good laugh, and making me scurry to find my Webster’s Unabridged Dictionary to look up “tryptophan.”

Not only did I have a good laugh over the column, but I learned a new word, and to have both of those in one day is a wondrous event.
