Letter writer: Obamacare hurting this small business owner

Small businesses hurt by Obamacare

In response to “Ahem, you know what’s working? Obamacare” (April 19 Editorial):

I do not know what kind of utopia Observer editors live in, but Obamacare is hardly working in my life.

My premiums have doubled, deductibles tripled, and plans canceled every year since its implementation.

While I agree more poor people have access, this has placed a large burden on working-class small business owners like myself.

I guess it’s easy to praise Obamacare when your corporation covers your health care.

George Franklin, Mint Hill

Repeal sweeping hate bill in its entirety

In response to “McCrory: Dialogue, not threats, needed on HB2” (April 18):

Let’s see, exactly what would a compromise on HB2 look like?

Make it illegal to discriminate against LGBT people when they want to take a taxi, but allow a hotel to deny them a room? Let Hobby Lobby turn them away from their public business, but make sure restaurants serve them?

HateBill2 is the most sweeping anti-LGBT legislation in the country and needs to be repealed in its entirety.

Diana Travis, Charlotte

City Council, mayor to blame for HB2

The liberal media would have us believe that Charlotte is doomed as a result of HB2.

There is more, much more to Charlotte than concerts, conventions, and the baffling bathroom debacle.

The majority voice of citizens, transparency, morality, and ethics must always prevail.

City Council and the mayor must shoulder complete responsibility for this fiasco – and remember that the City Council represents and speaks for all the people, not just a few.

Frank Harrington, Charlotte

Discrimination, not bathrooms, at issue

Restrooms are part of the issue on HB2, but a tiny part.

Let’s address the elephant in the room. HB2 is about discrimination. Pure and simple.

If your sexual orientation is anything other than “straight” you can be discriminated against. Period.

Pearl Jam, Boston, PayPal, and Bruce Springsteen all understand the situation and have chosen to make a stand.

Will our legislators only hear the cries when Bank of America decides to move its headquarters to Boston?

Steve Hysko, Charlotte

Donate concert proceeds instead

In response to “Springsteen didn’t keep his word” (April 19 Forum):

The only thing Bruce Springsteen and Pearl Jam accomplished by canceling concerts is to disappoint and punish loyal fans who bought their music, attended their concerts, and provided them riches beyond their wildest dreams.

If they really wanted to make a statement, why not just donate the proceeds of any concert to LGBT organizations so they can continue to fund their fight against what they deem discrimination and unfair treatment?

Jan Tucker, Indian Land, S.C.

Cannon should serve his entire sentence

In response to Eric Frazier “It’s time to forgive our prodigal son” (April 16):

With a smile on his face Patrick Cannon chose to take bribes and is paying for his greed and dishonesty.

Cannon does not deserve to be in a halfway house. He should spend the entirety of his sentence where he is now.

He disappointed Charlotte and disgraced us. He was caught just like a big, fat catfish going after chicken-gizzard bait.

Barbara Kerr, Charlotte

Use sports money to repair universities

In response to “UNC board seeks 100-year bonds” (April 17):

N.C. State University and UNC Chapel Hill each want to borrow $500 million to fix rotting classrooms and buildings.

No need for a loan.

Shutting down the sports teams for 10 years would save far more than $500 million.

Marcus Henry, Reidsville

Citadel should not give in, allow hijab

In response to “The Citadel considers first-ever uniform exception: allowing a Muslim hijab” (April 15):

Submitting to Muslim demands is in effect submitting to Sharia.

Demands will increase as the Muslim population increases; look at Europe.

Read the Koran, America, and wake up.

Stand your ground, Citadel.
