What chutzpah, commissioners, boosting your own pay!

A board pay raise? What chutzpah!

In response to “County board may boost own pay package” (June 17):

For over 20 years, I have restrained from commenting on all things Mecklenburg. However, this sitting county commission brings chutzpah to a new low.

How dare they spend the taxpayers dollars on such huge raises for themselves! And a car allowance – help me!

It may be in county manager Dena Diorio’s budget, but the monies can be spent elsewhere on a more pressing need.

I was a commissioner for four years, two as chairman. It is a part-time time job and each one chose this service knowing what the “perks” were or were not.

They should be more sensitive to the frustrations and hurdles taxpayers face. Shame on them!

Life, liberty and... protection from guns

In response to “Be wary of those who want to disarm you” (June 16 Forum):

Most of us agree the Constitution protects our rights.

Our whole governmental system protects our rights. We have a military to protect us. We have a system of laws to protect us.

Government even requires that we know how to drive a car to protect us.

We are not free to enjoy “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness” without these protections.

None of us are “free” while civilians have military-style assault weapons that end dozens of human lives in seconds.

We are not safe. We are not protected. We are living in tyranny.

Judy Biber, Charlotte

Politicians purposely mislead about guns

By definition, an assault weapon is a fully automatic weapon that continues to fire as long as you hold the trigger.

No one can legally buy one in this country.

So when any politician says a crime was committed with an assault weapon, they are either ignorant, misleading, or both.

Call the enemy what it is: ‘radical Islam’

No question that the ability for someone on a terror watch list to secure a gun should be tightened up.

However, our president’s inability to utter the term “radical Islam” is bordering on the bizarre.

The term clearly indicts only a tiny minority of the faith and seems to me a suitable and respectable term.

It’s as if FDR was resistant to use the word “Nazi” and targeted his rage at their Panzer tanks.

Trump’s bankruptcy experience an asset

The left is making much of Donald Trump’s debt history.

President Barack Obama will leave us with a $20 trillion national debt – up from $10 trillion when he took office. So what.

Here’s what: Trump declared bankruptcy and cleared his debts in the traditional way.

Mr. Obama should have declared the bankruptcy of the United States, but he will not. He is leaving us like student-loan debtors, with huge debt and growing interest.

Who is the wiser: Trump or Obama?

GOP, good luck taming Donald Trump

In June 2015 he was just another barking dog that the GOP thought would walk on a leash, come when they called, and obey commands.

A year later you realize, too late, that he’s really a wild tiger that you’ve got by the tail that goes wherever and does whatever it wants, and growls at everything and everybody.

Good luck with your taming program.

Jon Schuller, Charlotte

I agree with Trump’s plan to vet refugees

Our FBI director has warned about the need to thoroughly vet refugees entering the United States.

Extremists have claimed they are sending terrorists in the mix of refugees.

Yet, the liberal media – including the Observer – portrays Donald Trump as a racist and anti-Muslim because he wants to delay and properly vet all refugees coming from the war-torn Middle East.

President Obama wants to make this a religious issue instead of a crime and safety issue.

Keith E. Smith, Charlotte

Media needs to focus on policy questions

It’s about time the news media in this country start asking questions about policy.

I believe N.C. voters truly would like to read about important positions on the very hard problems we face as a nation.

The press seems incapable of asking the hard questions. I expect more from the Observer.
