College football next spring? One major survey of athletic directors says it’s possible

Will there be a college football season after this coronavirus outbreak?

Stadium polled 130 college athletic directors from Football Bowl Subdivision schools and received 114 responses. Of those, 99 percent think there will be college football in the 2020-21 school year, but opinions varied on when kickoff would be.

More than 60 percent think the season won’t start until October or November and 14 percent didn’t think it would start until January. One surveyed AD said he didn’t think there will be a season at all.

If the season began in January, a championship playoff might not end until Memorial Day.

The season is scheduled to begin Aug. 29 but only 24 percent of ADs polled believe the season will start on time.

Arizona president Robert Robbins told a Tuscon radio station Wednesday that one scenario he is hearing is that fall sports, like football, would be played alongside winter sports, like men’s and women’s basketball, in 2021.
