The Big South Conference will expand to nine football-playing schools in 2021 with the addition of Robert Morris University, league officials said Monday.

Robert Morris, from the Pittsburgh suburb of Moon Township, has competed in FCS football since 1996 as a member of the Northeast Conference, where the Colonials will remain for all other sports.

The school won five straight Northeast football titles from 1996-2000 and won again in 2010.

Other Big South football members in 2021 will be Campbell, Charleston Southern, Gardner-Webb, Hampton, Kennesaw State, Monmouth, North Alabama and N.C. A&T.

Campbell, Charleston Southern, Gardner-Webb, Hampton and N.C. A&T compete in all Big South sports. The other are football-only members.

“We’re excited to … become a part of a league that has sent multiple teams annually to the FCS playoffs in recent years,” Robert Morris athletics director Chris King said.

The Big South has qualified two teams in two of the past three years for the FCS playoffs. The Northeast Conference had a single qualifier each year.
