Charlotte MLS team name announcement no longer expected this month

Charlotte’s Major League Soccer team name, colors and logo were expected to be released this month, but the team is now pushing back that announcement, according to a source with direct knowledge of the decision.

“With everything going on in the world, we feel like it’s not the right time,” the source said, adding that the announcement is still coming “soon.”

“Hopefully next month,” the source said, citing the timing of the coronavirus pandemic and nationwide protests as reasons why Charlotte MLS has not yet dropped its official team name and colors.

The source also confirmed that COVID-19 has not impacted the team’s projected launch during the 2021 MLS season, but said that the pandemic has made staffing its front office harder.

The league completed just two weeks of the 2020 season before the coronavirus pandemic forced play to shut down in March. The current season is picking back up at the ESPN Wide World of Sports for a five-week tournament featuring all 26 current clubs starting July 8.

Charlotte MLS is expected to begin play at Bank of America Stadium when the 2021 MLS season starts next winter.

Further information on the timing of the team’s name announcement was not provided, although the source indicated that senior leadership likely has already decided on the name.

The name is rumored to be one of the following six: Charlotte Crown FC, Charlotte Fortune FC, Charlotte Monarchs FC, Charlotte FC, Charlotte Athletic FC or Charlotte Town FC. Those names are all either registered or part of a pending application in the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office database.
