New pro sports league will host men’s and women’s tryouts in Charlotte on Sunday

A new professional rugby league with men’s and women’s teams will host open tryouts in Charlotte on Sunday.

At least 100 athletes from the Charlotte area and across the country are expected to attend the tryouts for spots on 10 teams competing this summer in the first full season of the Premier Rugby Sevens league, officials said Saturday.

Tryouts will be held in March in California and British Columbia.

The league conducts traveling one-day tournaments that feature all 10 teams — six men’s teams and four women’s teams — in a series of 14-minute games. The league, which is not affiliated with Major League Rugby, debuted on Fox Sports and TSN in October.

League officials will evaluate athletes during Sunday’s open trials at the Charlotte Rugby Club, 2911 Bellhaven Circle.

Women will try out from 9 a.m. to noon and men from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
