NBA superstar Steph Curry graduated Sunday as a member of Davidson College’s class of 2022.

The Golden State Warriors guard led the Davidson Wildcats to the Elite Eight in 2008 as a sophomore and went pro after his junior season in 2009, leaving him one semester short of finishing his degree, the college said in a press release.

Curry, 34, re-enrolled at Davidson for the spring semester of 2022 and worked with two faculty members, along with a Stanford University professor and a University of California at Santa Cruz professor who taught Curry when both were at Davidson, to complete his remaining coursework, the release said.

Curry, who grew up mostly in Charlotte and graduated from Charlotte Christian’s high school, was awarded a Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in sociology.

Curry’s degree will also allow Davidson to retire Curry’s number 30 if the college chooses to do so. Davidson has long had a policy of not retiring players’ numbers unless they had graduated. As a two-time NBA Most Valuable Player and three-time NBA champion, Curry is the most accomplished Davidson basketball player the school has ever produced.

Curry, who is in the middle of the NBA playoffs, did not attend Sunday’s commencement. But his name was called, and the crowd erupted with cheers and whistles.

Davidson will present Curry his diploma when he’s able to return to campus at a future date, the college said.

Curry and the Warriors advanced Friday to the Western Conference Finals after defeating the Memphis Grizzlies.

Davidson live-streamed the ceremony from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at www.davidson.edu/livestream.
