LeBron James Has One Condition for Possibly Leaving the Lakers

The Lakers are set to face the Rockets in the first round of the NBA Playoffs, yet the biggest storyline remains LeBron James' future. Even in the final phase of the season, nobody is certain whether James will return next season, or if he does, which team he will join. A new report suggests what the Lakers star expects from his next destination.

After making history by playing alongside his son Bronny James, LeBron has few reasons left to continue beyond this season. The 41-year-old is still competing at a high level in the league. But according to a NY Times article, retirement next season could very well be possible. Apart from that scenario, Sam Amick and Dan Woike's report also hints at what James wants from his next team.

"The belief among league sources is that if James were to choose another team, he would do so only with the idea that he would elevate it to serious championship contention," the report read. The Warriors and Cavaliers have emerged as two strong candidates for the four-time NBA champion. The Clippers could also reportedly be part of the conversation, but a move across Los Angeles is still considered unlikely.

With almost every record under LeBron's name, there is very little left for him to achieve at this stage of his career. Another NBA ring could be the biggest motivation for him, along with the opportunity to continue playing alongside his eldest son. As James' preference remains clear, joining only a championship contender, the report also cited a Lakers return as a possibility.

The biggest issue surrounding LeBron's future with JJ Redick's squad next season is the salary cap. The Lakers have approximately $50 million in cap space, which would likely require James to take a pay cut, especially as Austin Reaves also seeks a contract extension. The article also notes that LeBron prioritizes winning above all else in this stage of his career.

The saga of James' future will continue throughout the Lakers' postseason run. All stars, including Luka Doncic, will need to stay focused on the Rockets as they navigate distractions surrounding retirement rumors.
