A former high school basketball star and college hoops standout was killed in a car accident this week. He was 22 years old.

Rickey Boone Jr., a former college basketball player at Mercer County Community College, was killed in an accident in New Jersey. His car reportedly drove off Route 1 and into a watery viaduct late Thursday night. The former basketball star reportedly lost control of his 2012 Honda CRV just after 11 p.m. on Thursday evening, falling into the body of water, Interim Police Chief Kevin Reading said.

The former college hoops player was pronounced dead on the scene.

His former school released a statement online.

"The impact he made in his short time will never fade. Those who had the honor of meeting Rickey all would agree he was beam of light who carried positivity with him everywhere. He was one of the kindest souls who will be missed deeply," the college team said on its Facebook page.

An official investigation into the crash is underway.

Our thoughts are with his friends and family members during this extremely difficult time this weekend.

May he rest in peace.
