Red Sox Announce Ranger Suárez News After Leaving Astros Game
Ranger Suárez took the mound Sunday at Fenway Park for his seventh start of the 2026 season as the Boston Red Sox looked to close out their series against the Houston Astros.
Coming into the afternoon, Suárez had been one of the few constants in a rotation that has been ravaged by injuries since Opening Day, making each of his scheduled starts and giving Boston an arm they could count on amid a wave of injuries to its pitching staff.
But on Sunday, the Red Sox were dealt another concerning development when Suárez exited the game after four innings and 70 pitches with the game scoreless.
The hook came earlier than expected, and the circumstances surrounding his departure raised red flags. Shortly after leaving the game, the team confirmed that Suárez was diagnosed with right hamstring tightness.
The timing is terrible for a Red Sox team that simply cannot afford to lose another starting pitcher. Garrett Crochet and Sonny Gray remain on the injured list with shoulder inflammation and right hamstring strain, respectively.

Boston's bullpen has also been hit, with Kutter Crawford, Patrick Sandoval and Johan Oviedo all on the IL as well , wiping out what was supposed to be legitimate rotation depth. Then there's Brayan Bello, who has been inconsistent at best.
Suárez's injury only makes it worse. The 29-year-old left-hander signed a three-year, $63 million deal with the Red Sox last December after eight seasons with the Philadelphia Phillies, In 2025, he posted a 3.66 ERA across 28 starts with 147 strikeouts - his best full-season numbers as a starter , and Boston signed him expecting a steady, durable left-handed presence who could eat innings behind Crochet and Gray.
His 2026 numbers have not matched that billing: through six starts, he carried a 3.94 ERA with 28 strikeouts and a 1.28. But with the rotation banged up, he is too valuable to lose at this point.
The Red Sox currently sit at 13-20, last in the AL East, and will open a three-game series against the Detroit Tigers on Monday.
