Matthew Stafford Enters 2026 With Big Rams Question Mark

The Los Angeles Rams shocked the football world when they drafted former Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson with the No. 13 overall pick in the 2026 NFL draft.

While star quarterback Matthew Stafford isn’t getting any younger, most analysts thought the team would select a wide receiver to eventually replace the aging Davante Adams. Instead, they opted to draft what they hope will become their quarterback of the future.

The move didn’t help fill what ESPN is calling the team’s biggest roster hole, though. In a new column the Worldwide leader suggested the Rams need to add depth at the wide receiver spot.

“There are a number of players behind Davante Adams and Puka Nacua, but none of them particularly stand out. The Rams didn’t invest in a receiver via the draft until CJ Daniels in the sixth round,” ESPN noted.

“Deep threat Xavier Smith had 18 catches for 303 yards last season, while Jordan Whittington — well-regarded for his run blocking — had 18 catches for 171 yards. Konata Mumpfield had 10 catches for 92 yards with a touchdown as a rookie. The Rams can get value out of these players.”

Despite hauling in 14 touchdowns last season, Adams had one of the worst seasons of his career with 60 receptions for 789 yards – his lowest since 2015.

Los Angeles didn’t take a wide receiver with any of its five draft picks, but did select former Ohio State star tight end Max Klare. That selection, though, still doesn’t help if either Adams or Nacua miss time during the 2026 season.
