Caldwell Cobras go 2-0 on day one of national championship softball tournament in New York

Caldwell Community College & Technical Institute went 2-0 on the opening day of the National Junior College Athletic Association Division-Three Softball World Series at Carrier Park in DeWitt, N.Y., advancing in the winner's bracket.

Caldwell opened the tournament with a 10-2 mercy-rule victory over No. 7 seed Suffolk Community College. The Sharks (19-11) scored two runs in the top of the first inning before the Cobras responded with five runs in the bottom half of the inning. Ally Greer's three-run home run with no outs gave Caldwell their first lead.

The two teams went scoreless over the next six-plus innings, setting up dramatics in the bottom of the 13th inning for Caldwell. Lexy Church got aboard via an error and advanced to second base on a sacrifice bunt by Greene. Church moved to third base on a wild pitch, and Ashland Palmer reached and advanced to second base on a fielder's choice. Greene's single to left field scored Church and gave Caldwell the walk-off 8-7 victory.

Cheek was also credited as the winning pitcher in game two, pitching six scoreless innings in relief.

Caldwell and Patrick & Henry have played eight times this season, with Caldwell winning six of those matchups.
