Urban Meyer Thinks College Football Playoff Is Getting It Wrong
Urban Meyer thinks the College Football Playoff is making a mistake.
The College Football Playoff has only been at 12 teams for a few years. However, college football is already planning on major expansion. The College Football Playoff is widely expected to expand to 24 teams.
This would mean that a handful of 9-3 teams, and perhaps even an 8-4 team one year, could reach the 24-team field. Is that we want for college football? It would certainly continue to de-value the regular season.
Meyer thinks a mistake is being made.
Meyer has made it clear that he is not on board with the College Football Playoff expanding to 24 teams.
"Yeah, I think 24 is too much," Meyer said, per The Script, via Nick Kosko of On3 Sports. "But I was wrong about 12. I thought 12 was a little bit too much. Miami gets in there, they would have never gotten in, and they should have won the national title. So, I think 24 is too much. You start dipping down, like you said, (into) the teams that have very mediocre years (and they) should not be in the playoffs, so I think 24 is too much."
Georgia president Jere Morehead agrees with Meyer
Morehead, the president of Georgia since 2013, agrees with the former Ohio State and Florida head coach.
"It's going to devalue big games during the regular season," Morehead said on Thursday. "I think it (would) devalue Georgia-Alabama or Georgia-Oklahoma (this) year. So I don't think that's a good idea.
"I was OK with going to 16. I thought that was a good number. But 24 scares me, particularly jumping from 12 to 24. If we went to 16 and tried that for a few years, see how it goes, and then we can evaluate whether we should go to 24. And from my standpoint, I would just stay at 12 then, if we can't get an agreement on 16."
Money rules all, though, and a push to 24 teams means more money - so that's what'll happen.
