The choice of opponent was not accidental either. Reports indicate Algeria specifically targeted Bolivia because of similarities between its style of play and the type of football often associated with South American nations. Facing Bolivia gives Petkovic one final opportunity to evaluate how his squad responds against a team that can replicate some of the challenges Argentina may present.
While much of the attention will naturally be focused on Messi and the reigning world champions, Algeria does have players capable of making an impact.

Riyad Mahrez remains the team's leading figure at 35 years old and is expected to captain the side in the tournament. The former PFA Player of the Year continues to play an important role, though Algeria has become increasingly careful with his workload. During the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, Mahrez was frequently substituted shortly after the hour mark, with Feyenoord winger Anis Hadj Moussa often taking over.
