Algeria Makes Unexpected Decision Before World Cup Opener Against Lionel Messi's Argentina

As the 2026 FIFA World Cup draws closer, defending champion Argentina is preparing to begin its title defense with a familiar figure leading the way. Lionel Messi and La Albiceleste open Group J play on June 17 at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, where Algeria will be waiting on the other side.

On paper, Argentina enters the tournament as one of the strongest contenders to lift the trophy once again. Algeria arrives with far fewer expectations, though recent results suggest the North African side could be capable of causing problems.

Since Vladimir Petkovic took charge, Algeria has put together an impressive run of form. The Fennecs have collected 21 wins, four draws and only three defeats across 28 matches while scoring 67 goals. Their confidence received another boost recently after a friendly victory over the Netherlands.

With the World Cup opener now just days away, Algeria has decided to take an unusual route in its final preparations.

Algeria Keeps Plans Under Wraps Before Argentina Clash

Rather than holding a traditional tune-up match open to fans and media, Algeria has scheduled a closed-door friendly against Bolivia. The match will take place next Wednesday at 10 p.m. with no public access as Petkovic and his staff make their final decisions ahead of the showdown with Argentina.

According to Tyc Sports (via DSports Radio), the match is being treated as Algeria's last major test before stepping onto the World Cup stage.

The choice of opponent was not accidental either. Reports indicate Algeria specifically targeted Bolivia because of similarities between its style of play and the type of football often associated with South American nations. Facing Bolivia gives Petkovic one final opportunity to evaluate how his squad responds against a team that can replicate some of the challenges Argentina may present.

While much of the attention will naturally be focused on Messi and the reigning world champions, Algeria does have players capable of making an impact.

Algeria: Stars to Watch

Riyad Mahrez remains the team's leading figure at 35 years old and is expected to captain the side in the tournament. The former PFA Player of the Year continues to play an important role, though Algeria has become increasingly careful with his workload. During the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, Mahrez was frequently substituted shortly after the hour mark, with Feyenoord winger Anis Hadj Moussa often taking over.

The future of the national team may be represented by Ibrahim Maza. The 20-year-old attacking midfielder has already built a reputation for finding pockets of space, progressing attacks and handling pressure with maturity beyond his age.
