NFL Insider Suggests League Could 'Dump' FOX For Political Reasons
Could the NFL stun the sports world and ultimately cut ties with FOX for political reasons?
One NFL insider thinks it's possible.
Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, which operates under the NBC Sports umbrella, believes that the league could one day cut ties with FOX, due to growing political pressure.
On Wednesday, the U.S. Congress held a two-hour meeting regarding the NFL's longstanding broadcast antitrust exemption. Clay Travis, a Fox News contributor, was among those to speak at the hearing. He made it clear that he's not a fan of how the league has operated in regards to streaming platforms and rising costs of games.
FOX is currently a big NFL rights holder, though the current deal ends in 2029. Is it possible that the league could ultimately cut ties with FOX?
Florio floated the idea on Wednesday.
NFL has long been partners with FOX
Could it happen? Perhaps.
"It would be a stunning move, if it happens. Fox arrived as a disruptor in 1994, snatching the Sunday afternoon NFC package from CBS and holding it for 32 years and counting," Florio wrote.
"Murdoch doesn't seem to care. He has drawn a line in the sand, and he has been willing to use everything at his disposal to get the NFL to tread lightly when it comes to the potential sale of more games to streamers."
FOX and CBS are the NFL's two biggest rights holders, broadcasting hundreds of games per season. FOX has broadcasted the NFC Championship Game for several years and a bunch of Super Bowls, too.
Where would those games go?
"It's still possible that Fox will end up without a package come 2030. But where would it go? Unless NBC or ABC are willing to take over, there would be no broadcast partner for the collection of Sunday afternoon games," Florio wondered.
It's going to be fascinating to watch, that's for sure.
