Golf Fans Ripped For 'Embarrassing' Criticism of U.S. Open Crowd

While some fans took issue with the crowd behavior at the U.S. Open on Sunday, others are calling the backlash "embarrassing."

It was clear on Sunday that the crowd was rooting against Wyndham Clark, who went on to win the tournament for the second time. Clark, who last year busted up the locker room at the historic Oakmont, is clearly an enemy among U.S. Open crowds. Fans were rooting against his every shot and pushing for others, like Scottie Scheffler, to ultimately catch him and win the tournament.

After his win, Clark admitted that he knew the crowd was against him.

"New York didn't really like me. I love you guys, but, you know, I get it," he admitted.

"Some of it is self-deserved. I did some unfortunate things last year that I really regret. I've been sorry multiple times and I'm still sorry, so hopefully I can win you guys over eventually. But I get it, they root for Scottie. Grand Slams only happen a few times. He's going to get it. He's the best player in the world, but today it's my day."

Barstool Sports' "Fore Play" podcast ultimately accused the U.S. Open crowd of "crossing" the line.

Fans were just "mean," they argued.

Others disagree, though.

Golf fans blasted for 'embarrassing' criticism of U.S. Open crowd

Other fans, meanwhile, blasted the criticism, calling it embarrassing.

"All of the whining about the US Open crowd heckling this weekend has reached an embarrassing level. My goodness how soft are these people making an issue of it. If yelling "miss it" or "get in the bunker" is cause for getting kicked out, nobody would be left at every football game," Paul Zeise wrote on X.

Others agreed.

"Golf is the only sport that prohibits fans from openly rooting against whoever it is you want to lose. It is so dumb. What a bunch of coddled pansies," one added.

"Golf is for lightweights," one shared.
