New York City’s Maxi Moralez stood about 25 yards away from the goal — one inspired shot away from tying the score and spoiling what had been a great Charlotte FC performance.

But it sailed high.

That missed opportunity was the final play of Charlotte FC’s 1-0 win over NYCFC in Bank of America Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The victory marks the first “sweep” — two wins in the same season against the same team — for the Queen City club.

Charlotte FC’s goal came courtesy of Daniel Rios, whose header found the back of the net off a Karol Swiderski cross in the game’s fifth minute. The team dominated the bulk of the game after that — and even found a way to hang on despite having to play a man-down after veteran defender Christian Fuchs was given a red card in the game’s 56th minute.

CLTFC 1 — NYCFC 0, FINAL

Live updates from Bank of America Stadium

Second half

90th minute (stoppage time +9): And that’s it! NYCFC’s Maxi Moralez has a free kick sail over the goal, and final time is called. Charlotte FC escapes this one with a 1-0 win and three points to send them up the Eastern Conference playoff table.

90th minute (stoppage time): It’s getting chippy here in Charlotte! Players get tangled up after a hard Charlotte FC foul sees some retaliatory shoving from NYCFC players. The supporters section erupts: “F-C! Char-lotte!” See the video below for more details.

90th minute: Charlotte FC is hanging on. Eight minutes of stoppage time gives NYCFC a fighting chance, though.

56th minute: Charlotte FC veteran defender Christian Fuchs, while defending a corner, catches a New York City defender in the face with an elbow, and that prompts a red card. The Queen City side is now playing with a man down.

49th minute: Kamil Jozwiak with a right-legged strike that just bangs off the right post. That makes eight CLTFC shots on the day (but only one on target). Charlotte FC controlling every bit of this game, and even still, only one goal separates the two sides.

First half

HALF: Charlotte FC 1, NYCFC 0. Charlotte FC leads a ton of stats at halftime: shots (6-4), possession (58% to 42%) and corners (2-1).

44th minute: A final Charlotte FC try! Daniel Rios chips a pass to Kerwin Vargas in the box for another promising opportunity, but the right-legged shot sails wide.

25th minute: Some mid-half stats: Charlotte FC leads in shots attempted (4-3), shots on target (1-0), passes (171-111) and possession (61% to 39%). The Queen City side is dominating this one.

5th minute: Daniel Rios, with his head, finishes off a beautiful cross from Karol Swiderski. 1-0, Charlotte. That was the second promising attack within a minute — a cross from Kerwin Vargas found the head of Adilson Malanda, who headed it into the cross bar. The Queen City team is attacking today!

1:08 p.m.: Kick is off, and we’re underway here in Bank of America Stadium!

1:06 p.m.: Charlotte FC is donning its black and mint green kits. New York City FC sporting its powder blue and white uniforms.

1:03 p.m.: Also, for what it’s worth: The rain has come to a stop for now! Next: national anthem, player introductions, then kickoff.

12:58 p.m.: The supporters section is popping despite the rain. The rest of the lower bowl isn’t as much. It’s pretty beautiful to see all the flags in the west end zone area: Brazil, Argentina, Mexico, among other countries, are represented.

12:25 p.m.: Charlotte FC’s starting 11 has been announced. Kristijan Kahlina will be in goal, with Harrison Afful, Adilson Malanda, Anton Walkes, Christian Fuchs, Brandt Bronico, Derrick Jones, Kamil Jozwiak, Karol Swiderski, Daniel Rios and Kerwin Vargas in front of him. On the bench: Sobocinski, Santos, Alcivar, Byrne, Bender, Shinyashiki, Gaines, Sisniega, Mora.

12:18 p.m.: As reported by The Charlotte Observer yesterday, the pitch looks a bit different than it has all season. The markings NYCFC and CLTFC will use are in yellow, but the field is also dotted with American football hash marks, sidelines and yard lines that the Carolina Panthers will use for their season-opener on Sunday. Bank of America Stadium can credit this new look to forecasts of inclement weather this weekend.

12:08 p.m.: Will MLS see an upset on Saturday? The last time CLTFC and NYCFC played was in mid-August, and the Queen City side took an unexpected victory thanks in part to a game-clinching score from Brandt Bronico. Charlotte, which has lost its last few matches at home, is in desperate need of a win as the postseason looms.
