Kerwin Vargas scores to lift Charlotte FC to seventh consecutive MLS win

The gates remained locked.

Charlotte FC withstood 90 minutes — plus four extra minutes at the end of each half — of pressure Sunday night, grinding out a 1-0 victory against the New York Red Bulls that extended its MLS winning streak to seven matches.

The Red Bulls outshot the Crown 14-4 and controlled 58.1% of possessions at Bank of America Stadium, yet found no way past Charlotte’s suffocating defense in front of 26,606 fans.

Charlotte now sits 15-11-2 overall with an 11-2-1 home record, the best current home mark in MLS. Head coach Dean Smith has transformed Bank of America Stadium into a fortress where visiting teams’ ambitions crumble against defensive stone.

The offensive breakthrough came in the 30th minute when Charlotte’s pressing forced a New York turnover. Idan Toklomati collected the loose ball in midfield and threaded a pass to Kerwin Vargas, who buried his right-footed shot from the right edge of the penalty area.

“We got the goal from a really good pressing trigger,” Smith said afterward. “Forced their lagging to a mistake. Idan was in a really good position.”

One chance, one goal. Charlotte’s defensive efficiency has become its calling card during this seven-match winning streak.

Goalkeeper Kristijan Kahlina preserved the lead with his fourth consecutive clean sheet. His most crucial save came in first-half stoppage time when Raheem Edwards found space in the penalty area, only to be denied by Kahlina’s positioning amid heavy traffic.

The second half became a siege. New York dominated possession while searching for cracks in Charlotte’s structure, finding none. Smith’s tactical setup neutralized the Red Bulls’ playmakers, forcing Emil Forsberg and Daniel Edelman into ineffective wide positions.

“Our game plan was to starve their two midfielders of the ball and their two playmakers,” Smith explained. “You could say we out-red-bulled Red Bull.”

The fortress held through every assault. Forsberg’s 94th-minute header sailed over the crossbar despite being a point-blank opportunity with 74% expected goal probability, summarizing New York’s futile evening.

This victory represents the culmination of Smith’s defensive project. Charlotte has posted 10 clean sheets in the past 17 home matches and 28 shutouts in 65 MLS home games. The Red Bulls became the latest casualty, and have managed only one road victory in 13 attempts this season.

The victory moves Charlotte to fourth in the Eastern Conference with six matches left in the regular season. The Crown’s home fortress advantage could prove decisive in playoff matches, where grinding out results matters more than style points.

Smith has built something teams fear: a venue where possession means nothing and chances disappear into defensive discipline. Bank of America Stadium has become Charlotte’s unconquerable burg, and the Crown’s championship hopes continue to grow stronger behind its walls.
