Eddie Jordan, formerly a head coach with three NBA franchises, is close to joining the Charlotte Hornets as an assistant to Steve Clifford, the Observer has learned.

The Hornets are finalizing a contract for Jordan, an NBA source said. Jordan would fill the role formerly held by Bob Weiss, who recently joined the staff of the Denver Nuggets.

Jordan coached the Sacramento Kings (1996-98), Washington Wizards (2003-08) and Philadelphia 76ers (2009-10). Jordan was 257-343 in those jobs, coaching four playoff appearances with the Wizards.

Jordan was also lead assistant to Byron Scott with the New Jersey Nets from 1999 through 2003. Twice in that span the Nets reached the NBA Finals, losing to the Los Angeles Lakers (2002) and San Antonio Spurs (2003).

Weiss, who coached four NBA franchises, was hired as a resource to Clifford in his first stint as an NBA head coach. Clifford said upon Weiss’s departure he wanted to find a replacement with head-coaching and/or lead assistant experience.

The Hornets coaching staff lost a lot of experience in the past six months. Associate head coach Patrick Ewing left in the spring to become head coach at his alma mater, Georgetown. Then Weiss moved on to the Nuggets to be closer to family living in Denver.

After Ewing left, Stephen Silas was elevated to lead assistant. Silas has been with the Hornets since 2010.

Jordan played guard seven seasons with four NBA franchises before going into coaching. Most recently Jordan coached Rutgers, his alma mater, for three seasons (29-68) before being fired in March of 2016.

Clifford and Jordan worked together as assistants with the Lakers during the 2012-13 season.
