Bay Area teacher to NBA MVP Steph Curry: Please don't visit my school

Hayward (Calif.) Mt. Eden High School teacher Matt Amaral is a lifelong Warriors fan and loves Stephen Curry. But this week he wrote on his blog he doesn’t want the NBA MVP to come visit his school.

Why? Amaral fears his students will get the wrong message. On his blog, teach4real.com, Amaral writes “Coming to poor high schools like mine isn’t going to help any of these kids out, in fact, it might make things worse.”

According to Amaral, it comes down to what the former Davidson star won’t tell his students, many of whom are poor.

Amaral wrote that he doesn’t want his students to think that the NBA is their way to escape their poverty. Amaral doesn’t think that any of his students, who will never know all the advantages that Curry grew up with as the son of an NBA star, will ever play pro sports.

Amaral wrote that his students’ best hope is education. Replacing the realistic dream of getting a solid education and a good job with the fantasy that pro sports will be their ticket out does his students a disservice.

“... what you won’t see is the fact that most of these kids don’t have a backup plan for their dream of being you.”

Amaral, according to KTVU.com, said his students must understand that there’s just a one in a million shot of making it to the NBA.

“Education is the great equalizer. With pro athletics and a lot of jobs, that isn’t necessarily the case,” Amaral told KTVU.com.

Having voiced his point about education, Amaral did leave the door open for a Curry visit on his Twitter feed.
