Charlotte Hornets sign Ray Spalding to a two-way contract, waive Robert Franks
The Charlotte Hornets waived rookie Robert Franks on Wednesday afternoon and quickly signed another player to a two-way contract to make an NBA deadline.
Hours after Franks was waived, the Hornets signed 6-foot-10 forward Ray Spalding to a two-way contract. Spalding was the No. 56 overall draft pick for the 76ers in 2018. The Louisville product spent time with the Suns, Mavericks and Hawks as a rookie and spent this season with the G League’s Rio Grande Valley Vipers.
Franks, a forward from Washington State, was offered one of the Hornets’ two two-way contracts in June after he went unselected in the draft. He was one of four developmental players on the Hornets’ 17-man roster who’ve spent most of the season with the G League Greensboro Swarm, along with Caleb Martin, Jalen McDaniels and Kobi Simmons.
Franks, 6-foot-7 and 225 pounds, was averaging 18.5 points and 5.6 rebounds with the Swarm. He did not make any game appearances with the Hornets.
Wednesday was the last day the Hornets could sign a player this season to an open two-way slot under NBA rules.
